Unlike the reflective glass-like finish of a polished stone, the honed travertine procedure creates a satin smooth finish, exhibiting a flat or matte appearance. Generally, this finish is preferred for floors, stairs, and other locations where the presence of water might make a polished finish slippery or where foot traffic may wear off a polished finish.
Some people are under the illusion that if the surface of travertine is honed, then it is more porous, when in actuality the porosity does not change with the finish.
