As a child, Lawrence Joss, founder of Bergammo, was introduced to the raw beauty and limitless potential of natural stone by his grandfather, who shared with him his love affair with Italy. As soon as he was old enough, Lawrence was visiting Italy with his grandfather, learning the legacy of natural stone, marble cutting and marble mosaics. He travelled across the lush rolling hills of the Italian countryside, studied local architecture, and soaked up as much knowledge as he could.

It was during these trips to Italy that his grandfather introduced Lawrence to his lifelong friend, Ehno Cardone, or as Lawrence would later call him, “Nonno.” Although he started out as a guide, over the years Ehno became a trusted companion and close friend. Recognizing Lawrence's passion and keen eye for structure and beauty, Ehno began to share his knowledge of Italian artistry and architecture.

Together, year after year, the three men would meet and travel the rustic, beautiful Italian countryside, appreciating and discussing the endless array of materials and the importance of detail and inspiration in all things. On one trip, they analyzed the colors of the intricate marble mosaics, perfected over millennia by artisans. On another trip they appreciated the beauty of the veins and subtle hues on a single piece of white marble.

Ehno’s love and knowledge of natural stone, its limitless potential, its multiple uses, and its sometimes subtle, sometimes dramatic color variations intrigued and inspired Lawrence to learn as much as he could.

Years later, Lawrence took this appreciation for quality and love of detail and entered into the surfaces industry, opening his first of many stores in Southern California. Lawrence strived to share his knowledge of kitchen remodeling ideas and bring affordable Italian design and artistry into homes all over the country.

This new line of subtle yet sophisticated products, which was inspired by the two men who nurtured and mentored Lawrence.

Lawrence still travels to Italy each year, spending several weeks observing the beauty of Italy's outdoor living spaces, and bringing this luxurious style of living to the United States through Bergammo’s exclusive product line.

It is a legacy and an invitation to beauty that Lawrence’s grandfather and Ehno Cardone would surely be proud of.
